Proverbs 30:2-6 Surely I am more stupid than any man, And do not have the understanding of a man. (3) I neither learned wisdom Nor have knowledge of the Holy One. (4) Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son's name, If you know? (5) Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. (6) Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
When we first read the author's summation of himself, we might be tempted to believe that his words might indeed apply to him, but they surely shouldn't be pointed at me! We believe ourselves to be so astute and able. Yet, Jesus in rebuke of the Laodicean church in Revelation 3 had this to say:
Revelation 3:17 "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing'; and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked;
The author of the proverb then, seems to be touching on something which Jesus made more clear. That we as men separated from the greatness and majesty and perfection of God, though we may think ourselves rich, are in reality deparately poor and miserable, unable and primitive wretches.
"Surely I'm more stupid than any man..." The author recognizes that he truly doesn't have the capability to really understand the depths and splendor and power of the Almighty God. We so often think ourselves wise, yet if we will look into the chasm of our heart, blackened by sin, we can say that we truly know nothing about our Master. We have inclinations or feelings or observations of ourselves and surroundings, yet we are senseless - disconnected from being able to observe and touch and relate to the greater truth of our spiritual surroundings and specifically to the One who is High and lifted up, our Creator God.
How then can we see and know the truth? How is it that this man can see his wretched state and I cannot? The answer is simple; he looks at the glory of God! Here is God who contains the wind and directs it by his hands and yet mere men can do nothing but be in awe of it. Here is God who contains the water of the earth in clounds of the air and yet mere men can do nothing be be in awe of it. Here is the earth on which we live and die, which houses our lives and hopes and dreams and failures, so much bigger than us, and yet here is God who made all the worlds and the stars and they bow at His glorious feet! Oh how majestic and mighty are the works of Him who made all things! Yet here we are, so lacking in knowledge and wisdom. We truly know nothing compared to the awesome and unmeasureable depths of God!
The man then looks a little further and finds the answers to his questions, "What is His name and what is His Son's name?" Ah, the right questions, the questions which contains the solution! The Creator and God of all can be the only source of truth and light. His Son, the Word of God, is the published image of the Almighty! Jesus, the Word of God, the visible and tangible thoughts and heart of God that became flesh; to purchase the souls of the unknowing, to buy from death the spirits of the unwise. How marvelous the love of our Father who would send His Son to be the heavenly manna for the wretches of man. What Grace! What Mercy! Can we now say "we know", or can we now say "we comprehend" the depths of God? What utter blasphemy and rejection of the true stature of the God of the Universe!
And yet, though we cannot claim to have any knowledge or wisdom by our own ability, herein lies the solution. The knowledge of God in in His words, those that were spoken through the prophets and those that were spoken in the flesh of His Son. Jesus is true knowledge and only in Him can we "know" ourselves and our God. So what boldness have we been given to be able to come to the throne room of God (Heb 4:16), through our great Intercessor Jesus Christ (1Tim. 2:5-6), the one who ascended and descended, (Eph. 4:9-10) the One who resides at the right hand of the Father and with the sons of men (1Pet. 3:21-22).
When we submit to His Word, and the words and ways of the Word, we find His pure truth and love and it becomes a shield to us against all the fiery darts of the wicked. As we stand only on His words, and not on our own, we are protected. We come to this protection through faith and trust in the Name of the Son, the One who stands in Heaven and on Earth, Jesus Christ. May He receive all our worship and adoration and may He be "our knowledge" and "our wisdom", and may our knowledge not be only about Him, but of Him, as One whom we adore! May we not think of "what" we know, but instead think of "Who" we know!
Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! (34) "For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?" (35) "Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?" (36) For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:17-19 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height; (19) to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
